English Leather by Dana was originally created in the 1930’s by the Vienna-based MEM company. Because the scent was similar to what Russian saddlers used to tan leather, it was originally called “Russian Leather.” In 1949, the scent was introduced in the United States as “English Leather” because of the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

The House of Dana was formally founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1932. Founder Javier Serra collected all the best ingredients, artists and distributors, and was set to compete with the best in the world. With great success in releasing its first ever perfume (and one of the first perfumes in the Oriental fragrance category), DANA went on to release a string of nearly 50 original perfumes through the 1950’s. Among the best known in the world are Tabu, 20 Carats, Canoe After Shave & Cologne, Emir, Platine, Sirocco Donna, Voodoo, Priorite, Imposible, and the remarkably well-received Ambush.
